Implementation of the NIS2 Directive on an open source e-learning platform

The Network and Information Systems Directive (NIS2) is new European Union legislation that aims to strengthen cyber security in the public and private sectors. The introduction of this directive means that IT systems, including e-learning platforms, need to be more secure. How does the implementation of the NIS2 Directive affect open source platforms such as Moodle™, Open edX® or Chamilo? What steps should be taken to ensure compliance with the new regulations?

What is the NIS2 Directive?

The NIS2 Directive is a development of the previous NIS Directive from 2016, but its scope is much broader. It covers more sectors, including education, and tightens the requirements for risk management and reporting of cyber security incidents. The new legislation requires organisations to implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect their IT infrastructure.

Open source e-learning platforms and NIS2 compliance

Open source e-learning platforms such as Moodle™, Open edX® or Chamilo are used in universities, schools or educational institutions and companies. Due to the open nature of the code, ensuring compliance with NIS2 requirements becomes a challenge, but at the same time offers the flexibility to customise security features. It is worth taking a look at some key aspects to consider when implementing this directive.
